On February 3, 2020, Franc D’Ambrosio was honored at a special knighting ceremony hosted by Italy’s Consulate General Lorenzo Ortona in San Francisco.  The bestowment was presented by order of the President of the Republic of Italy, Sergio Mattarella. Franc was formally given the title Cavaliere dell’Ordine della Stella d’Italia (Knight of the Order of the Star of Italy), the highest honor the Italian government can bestow on an expatriate. 

From stage to screen, Franc D’Ambrosio has entertained audiences around the world. Best known for his record-breaking run as the title character in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera, seen by over five million theatre-goers, Franc has appeared on film (The Godfather III) and concert stages throughout the North America, Asia, South America and Europe.

Franc D’Ambrosio was a special guest at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music’s The Other Side of the Brain: Exploring Emotion and Music in Dyslexia, presented in cooperation with the UCSF Memory and Aging Center and the Global Brain Health Institute on February 4.

Franc was welcomed back to Palermo, Italy, as the honored guest and featured performer for a special concert celebrating the 30th anniversary of the filming of Godfather III on July 11, 2019. He also made a special visit to Il Teatro Massimo, where he performed the operatic scenes from La Cavalleria Rusticana in the film.

Global Short Film Awards Festival director Andres Aquino is delighted to announce that actor and philanthropist Franc D’Ambrosio(star of Broadway’s Phantom of the Opera, The Godfather III, more) will receive a special Lifetime Achievement award during the GSF Awards Gala at the Intercontinental Carlton, Cannes, France on Saturday May 19, 2018.

He was awarded the distinction of being “The World’s Longest Running Phantom” — a title he retained for a decade — after logging more than 2,600 performances as the title role in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “The Phantom of the Opera.”

Life imitated art as the Phantom, or Franc D’Ambrosio, chose his own Christine — and Raoul — from master class participants Nov. 10 at Wayne County Community College’s Taylor campus.

The two finalists, Tom Butwin of Troy and Taylor Towers of Trenton, sang a cameo duet from Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Phantom of the Opera” during Franc D’Ambrosio’s Nov. 11 concert. Lara Semetko of Grosse Ile Township also was chosen to sing, performing a non-Phantom song at the concert.

Brilliant, versatile, spiritual, funny and generous. Franc D’Ambrosio, an artist with a thousand faces, hidden for over 2,600 performances behind the shadow of the most fascinating and obscure mask of the theater musical, The Phantom of the Opera. D’Ambrosio’s resume also includes an Academy Award nominated film, an Emmy Award Nominated television show, a four time Tony Award nominated Broadway show, two Grammy Considerations, and a National Theatre Award Nomination.

Michael Crawford may be THE stage "Phantom" to many ... but it's Franc D'Ambrosio whose name made the record books. And it's his hand prints that are cemented for all time in the sidewalk outside San Francisco's Curran Theatre.
